Concerns TU/e about outline agreement (Hoofdlijnenakkoord)

June 24, 2024

The four parties currently forming a government in the Netherlands recently presented their coalition agreement (Hoofdlijnenakkoord) for the upcoming term.

This agreement includes significant changes to education, such as restricting study migration, introducing a long-stay penalty, and cutting funding for scientific research. Read more about the implications of this response from the universities of the Netherlands (UNL, Dutch news post only).

As TU/e, we are concerned about these plans. We understand that they may raise questions and cause unrest within our community. However, there is still much uncertainty at this moment, and many topics from the coalition agreement need further elaboration. Together with all universities in the Netherlands, we closely monitor the developments.

Again, we want to emphasize that TU/e stands for education, research, and our community's international and inclusive nature. Everyone should be able to study and work here without worries, with our TU/e values and the well-being of our students and staff always in focus. We are already taking various measures to ensure this.

Additionally, we continue to uphold our international character at TU/e. “We are proud of our international community, which is part of our campus, Eindhoven, and the Brainport region,” says President of the Executive Board Robert-Jan Smits in response to recent developments regarding higher education internationalization.

As a technological university, we have a strong position. The Brainport region, and consequently our university, is in the spotlight both nationally and internationally. The reaffirmed collaboration with ASML and Operation Beethoven serves as evidence of this. We will continue to advocate for the importance of technical education and research in political discussions.

Dutch universities will engage in discussions with the new minister regarding the implementation of the topics outlined in the outline agreement.
