At TU/e, we test your knowledge in various ways: a written exam, presentation, design, or report that will be assessed. The chosen testing method depends on what we want to test and why we want to test:

  • Tests to learn from: this guides your learning process
  • Tests to study for: you’ll finish a study component with a grade

Exams

At TU/e, we use the word exams. An exam is research-based, and meant to test your knowledge, insights and skills that you have, and the assessment of the results of that research.

The official regulations regarding TU/e’s central testing can be found in the Exam Framework TU/e (see 'Downloads'). Other important arrangements for your study program can be found in the PER and the regulations of your Examination Committee.

No compulsory attendance at final test

Attendance of the first take of a final test of a course is not compulsory for participation in the re-sit. Would you like to take a resit exam? Then you have to register yourself. Pay close attention to the registration deadlines.

What to do in case you are ill?

In case you are ill, you can make use of the regular sick-reporting-procedure. In that case you have to inform your academic advisor immediately. You will first be referred to the regular re-sit. Should you fail to pass the exam and no re-sit attempt is left, you have the possibility to apply at your Examination Committee for a second attempt but only if you would face study delay due to this situation. The Examination Committee will decide if an extra attempt is possible and feasible.

During your exam

  • Supervised use of the restroom. Use the restroom only when necessary, as only one student may visit the restroom at a time. 15 minutes before the start and before the end of the exam you are not allowed to use the restroom.
  • You may bring water and some food (including oral medication), but your desk should be as empty as possible and should not interfere with other students.
  • You may use foam earplugs, provided that you have requested them to the student counselors at studentcounselors@tue.nl.
  • You may bring your bag, coat and phone. Your coat may be hung over the chair, your bag put under your chair. You turn off your phone and keep it in your bag.
  • In all cases, follow the instructions of the invigilators.

Assessment policy and assessment framework

Tests must meet certain quality requirements. The conditions to which tests are subject are laid down in the TU/e exam framework.

The general exam framework is determined at university level. The exam policy for study programs is described at departmental level. The exam policy is reviewed every year.

Examination Committee

Each study program has its own Examination Committee that supervises the quality of testing and assessments. Your teacher can bring in the Examination Committee if he/she suspects fraud. You could also reach out to the Examination Committee if you have complaints regarding testing and assessment.

Fraud and plagiarism

A TU/e diploma is very valuable. Anyone should be convinced that you have earned your diploma with integrity. Fraud doesn’t go along with that, thus the TU/e has its own Educational Fraud Policy. All your exams are screened on potential plagiarism.
