Study smarter, not harder
Like many students around the world, Joost Brandes, a 24-year-old electrical engineering student at TU/e, enjoys music, sports, and spending time with his friends. And, like millions of other students, he often finds himself procrastinating when it’s time to hit the books.
After all, who wouldn’t prefer hanging out with friends over diving into textbooks and preparing for exams? But when procrastination starts to affect your ability to complete assignments and pass exams, the fun quickly fades away.
Facing the Reality of Procrastination
So, what can you do when you realize that procrastination is holding you back and affecting your academic performance? What Joost did was to search for help in the TU/e Education Guide and that led him to the TU/e’s Study Management programs.
“I joined a few different groups,” Joost explains. “One of the first was focused on overcoming procrastination. We had weekly meetings where we shared our experiences and got tools and guidance on how to manage it. It was nice to be in a group because I realized I wasn’t the only one, and it made me feel less alone.”
Study Management Support at TU/e
The TU/e Study Management programs offer a range of support for students, helping them build essential study skills. Topics include overcoming procrastination, improving concentration, staying motivated, managing stress, and learning how to set and achieve academic goals.
Aside from the expert advice, Joost found that he learned a lot from the other students in his group.
“You can give each other advice on how to handle your challenges because you’re surrounded by students dealing with the same issues, so their advice is really valuable,” he says.
Seeing Real Results
Joost participated in several of the courses, and he noticed a real improvement.
“I made a number of changes in the way I approach my schoolwork, and I saw my results improve. I would definitely recommend it to other students who are struggling,” he adds.
