IS Mentor system

Mentor Selection

Each Innovation Sciences student has to select a mentor. The main role of the mentor is to guide you through the program. Students meet with their mentor, to discuss their (research) interests, ways of working, definition of working relationship (frequencies of meeting, ways of reporting, etc.) and the student’s program, in particular for the second and third semester, including the international term. Further, the mentor and student discuss (and sign) the Code of Scientifc Conduct and the outcome of your Professional Skills Assessment.

You will select a mentor based on your own research interests. During the first semester of the Master program (or during the pre-master), you will start to identify the research areas within Innovation Sciences in which you would like to specialize through your electives and thesis project. Preferably you will select a mentor that is also specialized in this area. To this end, mentors provide and overview of their research interests and the methodologies that are within their domain of expertise. Early in the first semester, an Innovation Sciences information event will take place in which students will be informed about the research and potential mentors. During this information event students you receive information on:

  • The master program
  • The area of expertise of each of the mentors

You can find a list of available mentors below and a short description of their research interests in the .pdf of the slides presented at that meeting (see download on this webpage).

Additional information about the researchers, their publications, and about the research group in general, can be found at the TIS-websiteNote: your mentor will not necessarily be your thesis supervisor; this might be the case, but it is not mandatory. In any case we strongly suggest you to select a mentor based upon the fit between your own interests and the expertise of the mentor. This ensures that the mentor can really help you in selecting all the elements of your Master program.

After the event, students will have to provide a list of their first, second and third preference for a mentor to the Education Coordinators, who will assign the mentors. Those who do not provide a preference will be assigned a mentor by the program manager.
