Requirements for admission

Mathematics

To be able to successfully complete a pre-master program at TU/e, you must have a sound understanding of mathematics B or T. Therefore, when you apply for a pre-master program, you must provide proof that you have the required minimum level of mathematics: pre-university (VWO) mathematics B or T.

You can do this by:

  • Having a pre-university (VWO) degree that includes mathematics B, or
  • Having passed the TU/e course 2DL00 or 2WBB0 with a minimum score of 5,5
  • Passing the TU/e admissions test mathematics for pre-masters (see below) that is offered by TU/e, or
  • Providing a certificate for Mathematics B from one of these external institutes:
  • Exemption VWO exam via DUO: for students with a technical bachelor's program with sufficient mathematics in their program, there is the possibility to apply for an exemption for the VWO mathematics B exam via DUO. The content of the bachelor's program will be compared to the final terms of Mathematics B. Based on this, an exemption or a rejection is issued. The procedure with DUO can take some time. It is therefore important to start the procedure well in advance.

If you want to start a pre-master in September, you need to fulfil the requirements by 1 September of that same year. If you start in February, you need to fulfil the requirements by 1 February. You cannot start your pre-master if the requirements are not met. In other words: your grade needs to be known before 1 September or 1 February, respectively.

TU/e admissions test mathematics for pre-masters

The TU/e admissions test mathematics for pre-masters is provided three times a year: in March/April, May/June, and October. You can choose when you want to take the test. If you fail the test, you can choose to participate again the next time the test is offered. To take the mathematics test at TU/e, you will pay a fee of €80 per test.

Exceptions

Do you want to apply for a pre-master program at the department of Built Environment or Industrial Design? The mathematics requirements do not apply. However, because a sound level of mathematics is indispensable to successfully complete your education at TU/e, it is strongly recommended to test your knowledge of mathematics before starting these pre-master programs.

Do you want to apply for a pre-master program in Mathematics? More stringent requirements may apply. Please contact the student administration of the Mathematics department for more information.

English

To successfully participate in a TU/e pre-program, you need to have a sound knowledge of the English language. Therefore, you need to provide proof that you have (at least) a pre-university (VWO) level in English by means of:

  • A VWO degree, or
  • You have obtained the Staatsexamen VWO Engels, or
  • If you fall into one of these categories, or
  • A certificate confirming these English language proficiency requirements.
  • You attended an HBO bachelor’s program in the Netherlands, in which English was the sole language of instruction throughout the bachelor's program (demonstrated or indicated by the program).

The costs of obtaining a certificate differ per institute. More information is available on the TOEFL website, the IELTS website or at the British Language Training Centre (BLTC). It is estimated that the costs currently vary between €230 and €350.

Timing
If you want to start a pre-master in September, you need to fulfil the English proficiency requirements by 1 September of that same year. If you start in February, you need to fulfil the requirements before 1 February of that year. You cannot start your pre-master if the requirements are not met.

It is up to you to decide where and when you obtain your certificate. Please check the websites mentioned above for available dates.

To conclude

1 September and 1 february are strict time limits. If you cannot comply with the requirements for mathematics and English within these limits, you cannot be admitted to the pre-master program. You will have to wait until the pre-master starts again. Thus, it is advised that you comply with the requirements in a timely manner.
