Every university has Student Financial Aid (formerly known as 'Profileringsfonds'), including TU/e. With Student Financial Aid, we offer financial support to students who fall behind in their studies due to personal circumstances, such as family circumstances, a position in a board or participatory body or top sports.

If your studies are delayed due to a (chronic) illness or a functional impairment, you must first apply for an extension of the performance-linked grant. If your studies are delayed by more than one year, you may then be able to receive compensation from Student Financial Aid.

Applying for compensation

  1. Make an appointment with the student counselor. The discussion you have with the student counselor serves as the starting point for the processing period, so schedule your appointment on time!
  2. Based on the discussion, the student counselor will assess whether you are eligible for compensation from Student Financial Aid. If so, you will receive an invitation via Osiris to complete a digital application form.
  3. All applications require you to provide supporting documents. Read here which proof is required for which circumstances. You must report your personal circumstances that cause study delays in a timely manner, namely within 2 months after the circumstances arise. This can be done with the academic advisor or the student counselor. If you do not report anything or do not report in time, it may mean that you will not receive any compensation or only partial compensation.
  4. The deadline for submitting an application is January 1 of the academic year following the academic year in which you were delayed.
  5. The student counselor handles all applications on behalf of the Executive Board and makes a decision within eight weeks of the submission of an application. You will be notified of the decision in writing.

There is a different application procedure for applying for an administrative grant and an allowance due to membership of a participatory body.

If your name has been passed on to the student counselor by the umbrella organizations of the study and student associations, you will receive an invitation at the beginning of April 2024 to fill out an application form in Osiris. The application must be submitted before May 1st. The student counselor will then assess whether your application meets all of the conditions. If it does, the administrative grant will be paid out in June.

Applying for an allowance due to membership of the University Council, Program Committee or Department Council is done via Osiris. If you would like to apply for this, please let us know by sending an email to the student counselor within two months of the end of your membership. You will then receive an invitation to complete an application form in Osiris.

If your application is approved

If your application is approved, we will determine how many months of your study delay will be compensated. We call these recognized months. We take into account your personal circumstances, the actual study delay incurred and the time in which the study delay can be made up. The total number of recognized months is capped at 24 months during your enrollment period at TU/e. For some circumstances, we have established a shorter maximum number of months.

  • Pregnancy: 4 months.
  • University Council, Program Committee or Department Council membership: maximum of 1 month per academic year.
  • Top sport/top talent: 12 months for the entire enrollment period at TU/e.
  • Administrative grant: 9 months per academic year, capped at 14 months for the entire enrollment period at TU/e.

If your application is rejected

The student counselor may decide to reject your application and will then inform you of the intention to reject your application. If you disagree with this intention, you can respond to it within two weeks. The decision will then be made. If you do not respond, the intention will automatically become a decision after two weeks.

If you do not agree with the decision, you can file a notice of objection with the Executive Board within six weeks of the announcement of the decision. You can submit the objection through the digital complaint form.
