Tips on what to do after you have graduated

There are several important practical matters that you need to think about after you have graduated. Consider, for example, arranging comprehensive health insurance and liability insurance, applying for benefits if applicable, or paying back your student loan. We have summarized several important considerations below, and also offer various useful tips regarding career coaching and opportunities for further education abroad.

Insurance

Most students receive student loans during their time at the TU/e, and you may have taken out student healthcare insurance. Once you have graduated, you no longer receive a student loan and your healthcare insurance will lapse, unless you have a job (full or part-time) and continue to work in this position. Even before your graduation ceremony, it is a good idea to start looking into your options regarding health insurance after you have completed your studies. The policy terms differ per individual, the situation, type of insurance and insurer. An overview and comparison of policies is available on: www.verzekeringssite.nl/zorgverzekering.

Career support after graduation TU/e Career Academy

Both students and graduates can contact the TU/e Career Academy with questions about their careers. Up to 6 months after graduation, you can make free use of all the career support offered by the TU/e Career Academy. For example, there are career workshops, individual coaching in the field of labor market orientation and you can get tips about your CV, cover letter and LinkedIn profile. You can also opt for online coaching. Ideal when you are no longer in Eindhoven during your internship, graduation assignment or after your studies.
More information about what the TU/e Career Academy has to offer you can be found here. If you would like support in getting in touch with companies, you can also contact TU/e Technificent. They mediate between students and companies.

Unemployment benefit

A logical step after graduation is to find a job. We recommend that you first actively look for a job. Work experience is not only financially beneficial, but it also brings valuable skills and networking opportunities that will benefit your future career.
If finding work takes a little more time and other financial resources are lacking, these unemployment benefits can help. You are then obliged to register with the UWV. You may be entitled to a General Social Assistance Benefit (ABW) from the Municipal Social Service.
If you have already worked as an employee during your studies, you may also be entitled to unemployment benefit (WW). This looks at your employment history. The type of benefit depends on the number of years of work in the past five calendar years before you became unemployed. For more information, please contact the UWV or Werk.nl.

Grants for further education or research outside the Netherlands

The European Union, the Dutch government and numerous foundations offer various grants for students interested in further education, an internship and/or research abroad. Some of these grants are outlined below. You may be eligible for these grants once you complete your Master’s program.

  • Leonardo da Vinci grants for graduate internships
The Leonardo da Vinci Program offers grants for everyone who is available to enter the job market, including recent graduates.
An international internship at a company or institution is not only beneficial to your personal development, it also improves your chances in the job market. The internship must be in another European country than the Netherlands. Length of the internship: at least 2 weeks and a maximum of 26 weeks.

Notebook

Did you participate in the TU/e Notebook Plan during your study? Once you have graduated, the obligation associated with the Plan lapses. Your notebook is then paid off, although it is not possible to sell your notebook back to the TU/e.
Once you are no longer a student, you are also no longer entitled to use the ICT facilities at the TU/e. You therefore need to have the software uninstalled from your notebook. Remember to visit ICT Services/Student within 5 days of the termination of your enrollment to have the software uninstalled. If you do this later, it will cost you €50 per month.

Keep your student email address for a maximum period of one year

After graduation, it is possible to continue to use your student email address for a maximum period of one year after your enrollment is terminated. In order to keep your student email address, you should register on the TU/e Alumni portal within one month. After you have been deregistered by Education and Student Affairs of the TU/e you will receive an e-mail “Welcome to the TU/e Alumni community!” at your student email address, where you can read more about the TU/e Alumni portal.
You can register from the moment you have officially passed your program. To register: go to www.tue.nl/alumniportal and click on `Click and activate your profile`. After this you will be asked to complete a few steps and you will be asked to check and / or fill in your details. Upon completion of your registration, your student email address will be automatically renewed for one year. If you do not register on the TU/e Alumni portal within one month, the student e-mail address will be deleted one month after your enrollment is terminated from TU/e. Please note! After this one-month period your student email address is deleted and cannot be retrieved.

Canceling student loan with the Education Executive Agency (DUO)

The TU/e automatically informs DUO that you have obtained your degree. Please note that you are required to cancel your student loan or grant yourself. Visit the DUO website for more information: https://www.duo.nl/particulier.
