Electives

Electives

The elective part of your Bachelor’s program consists of 15 credits of USE components and 45 credits of electives (or 40 credits of electives when you choose to extend the final bachelor project from 10 credits to 15 credits).  Depending on your ambitions, interests and capabilities you could, for example, decide to deepen your knowledge of your major, explore the boundaries between a number of disciplines, study a combination of two majors (possibly to gain two degree certificates), take on the challenge of an Honors program or obtain a second-level teaching qualification for pre-university education.

You can choose elective packages or separate elective courses. In principle, any course in the Bachelor College can be chosen as an elective, including major courses from other programs. You can also take more than one USE learning trajectory, in this case the second USE trajectory will be marked as a coherent package of 15 credits. In your first year, you can discuss your options with your student mentor, or with a teacher coach when you are a 2nd or 3rd year student. We also advise you to visit the annual Check Your Match event, to help you choosing your electives and to gather information on the electives that suit your interest.

Requirements of your elective space
Your elective space will be assessed on 3 criteria:
1. level, 2. coherence and 3. overlap courses.

1.Sufficient level
The elective space (including USE) needs to have a minimum 20 EC level 3 courses & 10 EC level 2 or level 3 courses. The level of each course is mentioned in the PlanApp or in the Osiris Course Catalogue.

2. Coherence
The elective space must be sufficiently coherent. By choosing two coherent packages with a minimum of 25 EC next to your USE learning trajectory you always meet the coherence requirement. However, this is not a mandatory requirement. If you choose to deviate from this recommendation, you need to add a motivation when handing in your proposal.

3. Overlap
The elective courses you choose are not allowed to have any overlap with our major courses. You can check this yourself via the list of excluded overlap courses on the education guide.

Additional Conditions

  • If you choose the electives 2WA30 Analysis 1 and 2WA40 Analysis 2, you should replace the major course 2DBN10 Advanced Calculus (generations 2015-2018) or 2DN50 Advanced Calculus (2012-2014) by an additional elective.
  • If you choose the electives 2WF20 Linear Algebra 1 and 2WF30 Linear algebra 2, you should replace the major course 2DBN00 Linear algebra (generations 2015 and later) or 2DN60 Linear algebra and vector calculus (generations 2012 – 2014)

Important!
Your elective space will be assessed on the above criteria: level, coherence, overlap. However, when approving the elective program, overlap in time slotsscheduling of the courses and the entry requirements for the selected courses are not taken into account. This is the sole responsibility of the student. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind the needed prerequisites of a course as well as the time slot of a course. The Osiris course catalogue, the PlanApp, and this website can help you with this.

Submitting your proposal
You can submit your proposal for evaluations via the PlanApp once you have compiled your complete proposal for the elective space and earned at least 90 credits. More information on how to do this can be found at this education guide page.

Tip: Use the elective courses in your first year to discover your personal interests. Most of the coherent packages start in the second year, on some of the packages we advise to start in the first year to make sure you finish your Bachelor in 3 years.

Tip: Would you like to do a Masters’ after you finished the Bachelor College? We advise you to also check this website. If your major doesn’t give direct admission to the Masters’ program, you could take homologation courses as free electives. Contact the academic advisor of the Master’s program for more information.
