Project 1: Design

DPM115 Project 1 Design is the first project in the master’s program of the Department of Industrial Design.

The challenges for design in a societal context require collaboration and teamwork. Therefore in this design project, you will work on a design task in a multidisciplinary team; of (ideally) four master students with different backgrounds and expertises. In this project, you must demonstrate that you as a team are able to manage your own design process and choose for appropriate methods and tools (under guidance) for successfully fulfilling the given design task. As a team, you must demonstrate that you have considered attitude, knowledge and skills from at least four expertise areas in the designed system, product or service. You must demonstrate integration of at least one expertise area on an advanced level.

As an individual future Industrial Design Engineer, you are able to describe, analyze and evaluate the collaboration in the team, your role and your individual contribution to the design process and deliverables. You should be able to relate your personal learning goals as formulated in your personal development plan to the learning process, outcomes and missed opportunities within the project. You should be able to plan learning that logically follows from the done analyses and evaluations.

Orientation

When you are a pre-master or final bachelor student at the department of Industrial Design you can visit the project market. The project market gives an impression of the projects that will be offered the following semester. During the project market you can orient yourself what squad might align with your development. On the day of the project market the project registration opens.

Registration

When you have completed the bachelor or pre-master program or are intended to complete it during the current semester, you need to register for the project:

The deadlines for the project registration can be found in the Year Planning on the Forms and files page. You have the opportunity to give two squad preferences and a motivation for these preferences. Every project has a maximum number of registrations. Please be aware that it is possible that you will not get allocated to the squad of your preference.

If you are a new student (and did not complete your bachelor or pre-master program at the Department of Industrial Design) our Center for Student Administration (CSA-ID) has contacted to give a preference for a squad. They will register you for this project.

One week before the start of the semester the project allocation is final, and you can check Osiris ("Overview registrations") for your allocated squad.

Coaching

The design project is executed in one of the application domains of the squads. Within the squads, research and design go together in developing innovative systems, products and/or services. The application domains are derived from the research topics that are covered in the research groups of the department of Industrial Design. In each squad, staff members are gathered with specific expertise; each squad therefore covers a specific set of expertise areas. Make a deliberate choice in what expertise areas you would like to develop in the project. Different staff members offer different approaches and design (research) preferences.

During the project you are supported by, among others, the squad leader, scientific staff, experts from practice and PhD candidates. The team will be supported by a project coach, who is one of the fore-mentioned persons. The project coach will be your first contact person and this person will give you guidance in integrating your professional skills, knowledge and attitudes of the expertise areas in the project and deliverables. You will present your results in the squad, together with other bachelor and master students. In addition to the supervision by the project coach, the squad can also organize group teaching activities; e.g. co-coaching, feedback on presentations and demonstrations, workshops and lectures.

Assessment

Master Project 1: Design will be concluded with a competence assessment. The assessment evaluates your overall competence of designing as demonstrated in the quality of the deliverables, your design process and the development of your professional skills; as is also described in the competence assessment rubrics for master project 1. You can find the Rubrics on the Forms and files page.

Deliverables

  • Demonstrator (as presented on the Demo Day)
  • Report (maximum 5000 words, excluding figures, references, appendices, suggested font size 12)
  • Individual reflection (maximum of 1000 words, may include images)

Demonstrator
Together with your group you develop a robust prototype that features (part of) an intelligent system; and/or provides a clear experience (of a service) for the considered stakeholders. You demonstrate your prototype on the Demo Day. The Demo Day is a formative assessment moment, wherein you receive feedback from your examiner(s), and is part of your competence assessment.

Report (Group)
At the end of the project you deliver a report of your group effort. You are encouraged to express your design practices in your project in a structured but rich and visual way. In the design report, there should be clearly indicated what the contribution of each group member is to both the process and the deliverables. A suggestion is to use the SIGCHI Extended Abstract Format template and structure for your design report. A maximum of 5000 words may be used for the design report, excluding references and appendices. Both your design report (group) and reflection (individual) need to be delivered via Canvas.

Reflection (Individual)
As an addendum to the design report, you write a structured and clear individual reflection on the integration of the expertise areas within the project, the development of professional skills and your overall competence as a designer. In the reflection, you describe, analyze and evaluate your collaboration process, your role in the team and your individual contribution to the design process and deliverables. The description, analysis and evaluation of personal learning goals (as formulated in your personal development plan, learning process and outcomes and missed opportunities for learning should be included as well. The reflection should demonstrate insight in the fore-mentioned topics and leads to intentions for learning that logically follow from the analysis and evaluation. The reflection may not exceed the maximum of 1000 words.

Examiners

You will be assessed by two examiners. One of the examiners is your mentor. Both examiners will acquaint themselves with the submitted report/paper. One of your examiners will visit you during the demo day.

Assessment Criteria

There are a couple of fixed criteria you will be assessed on. Since each squad and project coach have another approach and expertise, the project coach (first examiner) can add extra criteria or deliverables to the assessment.

Outcomes

You can score insufficient in some criteria, as long as the overall topic is scored at least sufficient. Based upon the assessment the project can result in the following outcomes:

  • In case all criteria are met, you will receive a P or E verdict.
  • In case the topic Overall Competence of Designing (OCD) is not met, you will receive a H verdict.
  • In case the topic Scientific and Professional Skills is not met, you will receive a C verdict and have the opportunity to do a retake; you need to redo/update the report, demo or reflection.
  • In case the topic Professional Identity and Vision (PIV) is not met, you will receive a H verdict.
  • In case the topic Competence Development is not met, you will receive a H verdict.
  • No show/no deliverable(s): NV.

Verdicts

You will receive a verdict as a result for the project. The verdict as recorded in Osiris is binding.

  • Promotion with excellence (E): the student is promoted with excellence and receives the assigned credits;
  • Promotion (P): the student is promoted and receives the assigned credits;
  • Conditional Hold (C): the student is not promoted unless conditions are sufficiently met within a maximum of three weeks (after the verdict is recorded in Osiris) - some topics are assessed as insufficient; or
  • Hold (H): the student is not promoted and does not receive the assigned credits.

Retake

In case of a retake the student has to (based on the feedback of the examiners) redo one of the deliverables below:

  • Improve the demonstrator
  • Improve the report
  • Improve the reflection

You will deliver your retake on Canvas in a separate assignment. The maximum deadline for the retake is three weeks after the original verdict is recorded in Osiris (≠ the publication date of the feedback/Rubrics on Canvas).
